When AFL Premiership Player, Jeremy McGovern set out to build his dream family home, he had a clear vision in mind: a space that would evolve with his growing family and serve as a lasting backdrop for years of memories. With a busy career and active family life, Jeremy wanted a design that maximised both indoor and outdoor spaces, suited their fast-paced lifestyle, and embraced the beauty of coastal living.

Timeless Home Designs collaborated closely with Jeremy and his partner to bring their vision to life. The goal was to create a modern, coastal family home that combined functionality with style. With expertise from Tarryn Leigh Interiors and LV Exteriors, the team transformed the original two-bedroom house into a spacious five-bedroom coastal haven, complete with a pool and backyard designed for both relaxation and entertaining.

Overcoming Site Challenges with a Creative Design Solution

The existing property posed distinct challenges. The original home, a modest two-bedroom property, was surrounded by a dense front yard jungle, and uneven terrain in the backyard due to its coastal location.

Timeless Home Designs’ solution was to expand vertically, adding more rooms while reimagining the outdoor spaces to accommodate both family activities and hosting, with a focus on thoughtful landscaping.

A Vision of Coastal Elegance: From Concept to Creation

Once Timeless Home Designs presented the first concept, Jeremy and his partner were immediately on board. The design captured everything they hoped for – a modern, coastal aesthetic, with a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors.

NewTechWood’s wide range of products and colours provided the perfect solution for the outdoor transformation. Its versatility enabled the design team to create a cohesive and functional outdoor space that complemented the home beautifully.

Tarryn Leigh Interiors played a crucial role in refining the home’s colour, ensuring that the NewTechWood decking, cladding and screening harmonised perfectly with the overall design.

Canadian Cedar was just about to hit the market at the time, so we decided to change the cladding to this in lieu of Blackbutt for something different and fresh. Plus it was going to match the white front door perfectly. The decking in the Blackbutt flowed effortlessly, paired with the floor tiles and internal cabinetry we selected. It gives a depth of colour on the horizontal surface which was paramount to achieve considering the tonal white colour pallet selected for both internal and external finishes. The high contrast of the white render and panelled entry door works in harmony with the warm tones of the Blackbutt decking and bench seat, creating a contemporary coastal colour palette” said Tarryn Leigh.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, NewTechWood was chosen for its resilience to the coastal sun and elements. Its durability made it an ideal choice for key design elements, such as the feature wall and screening. The natural timber look, combined with its long-lasting resistance to the coastal climate, ensures the home’s modern coastal charm will endure for years to come.

Putting forward NewTechWood, Jeremy absolutely loved it because it still gives that timber look and feel. It was something that could be utilised really well in the feature wall. Knowing it’s in that coastal area and west facing, we had to look at different products. NewTechWood was something that I knew that would last the test of time in terms of the weathering and sun. Using NewTechWood in that feature wall was a good element and something that I designed in from the start” shared Tim Veurink, Timeless Home Designs’ Director & Principal Building Designer.

The challenging topography was addressed creatively with a multilevel landscape design. New Grade Landscape was engaged to finalise the plant selections and placements, including a distinctive palm tree in the front yard to reinforce the coastal theme. The steep slope was cleverly utilised to incorporate a pool with views overlooking the park, while the backyard was levelled to create a practical and enjoyable space for the children.

A Successful Coastal Transformation with NewTechWood

The transformation from a modest two-bedroom, two-bathroom home to a stunning five bedroom coastal family haven was a true success. The collaboration between the design team and Jeremy resulted in a home that not only met his family’s needs, but also garners compliments from guests. NewTechWood played a key role by offering a complete solution for the outdoor space – combining decking, cladding and screening in complementary colours.

“First impressions walking into a house are normally everything. We’re just stoked that the first thing they get to see really is the NewTechWood…We don’t have to worry about maintaining, more about creating great memories with our friends and family.” said Jeremy.

The final design utilised NewTechWood’s UH61 Castellation Cladding in Canadian Cedar, beautifully incorporated into the feature wall. The home was further enhanced by UH55 Screening in Canadian Cedar, and the expansive deck and outdoor bench featured US49 Terrace Decking in Blackbutt. The harmonious coastal palette not only created a refined and cohesive look, but also ensured long lasting beauty and practicality, thanks to the durability and low-maintenance qualities of NewTechWood.
