Composite Timber Decking in Melbourne

Durable, hassle-free composite decking built for Melbourne’s unpredictable weather.

Composite Timber Decking Engineered for Melbourne's Four-Season Climate

Melbourne’s weather is notorious for changing from one season to the next. The city gets rain throughout the year, with cooler, humid conditions in autumn and winter before the drier, warmer weather arrives with summer.
For timber decking, those repeated shifts mean regular exposure to moisture, drying and temperature fluctuations. Shaded areas end up staying damp longer, especially through the cooler months.
NewTechWood composite decking is designed for Australian conditions, with moisture resistance, stability and low-maintenance finishes that suit Melbourne’s changing weather. It also eliminates the need for continuous oiling, sanding and painting associated with traditional timber decking.

NewTechWood offers a range of composite decking styles and colours, giving Melbourne homeowners options to suit anything from an established period home to a new contemporary build.

What a Melbourne Year Actually Does to a Timber Deck

A Melbourne deck goes through wet winters, crisp mornings, hot summers and plenty of changes in between. Melbourne averages around 86 days of measurable rainfall each year, while average minimum temperatures drop to 5.5°C in July and average maximums reach 27°C in January. That means natural timber is repeatedly exposed to changes in temperature and moisture, absorbing and releasing moisture as conditions change.

Composite decking offers a different approach. NewTechWood boards have been specifically designed to stay stable in changing outdoor conditions, while the low-maintenance surface means there’s no need for regular oiling, sanding or painting.

Mould, Algae and Slip Risk in the Shaded Months

Melbourne’s cooler, wetter months can leave shaded decking damp for long periods. Leaves, dirt and moisture can also accumulate in the areas that don’t get as much sunlight and airflow.

NewTechWood’s fully capped boards provide a protective layer around the whole board, helping protect against moisture, mould and exposure to the elements. The range also includes options with slip-rated surfaces for areas where wet conditions are to be expected.

Fully Capped for Premium Protection

NewTechWood composite decking is fully capped, including the groove area, so the protective layer extends around the exposed spaces of each board.

This construction gives the decking an extra layer of protection against the conditions it faces outdoors, from rain and moisture to dirt, insects and everyday wear. It also helps preserve the way the boards look, which is especially helpful when you’re trying to keep the original finish without regular treatments.

NewTechWood decking still needs some rudimentary cleaning, but there’s no need for the ongoing sanding, oiling and sealing associated with traditional timber decks.

Bushfire Resistant with BAL 29 Rating

NewTechWood composite decking is BAL 29 fire rated making it an excellent solution for most bushfire prone areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Melbourne homeowners moving from timber to composite decking?

The appeal of composite decking is different for every homeowner. For some, it’s the forgiving maintenance requirements. For others, it’s the consistency of the finish, the range of colours or the ability to get the look of timber without the drawbacks.

Melbourne winters bring cooler temperatures, rainfall and high humidity. NewTechWood decking is designed for the Australian outdoors and can be used throughout any of Melbourne’s seasons.

Proper installation is key, including adhering to the recommended joist spacings, fixing system and allowances for movement. See our installation guides for more information.

Melbourne has a mix of architectural styles, from Victorian and Edwardian homes to weatherboard houses and contemporary builds. A decking colour can either complement the existing character of a property or create a striking contrast.

NewTechWood offers a range of timber-inspired colours, so samples are useful when comparing the finish against your home’s exterior and surrounding landscape.

The cost of a composite deck depends on the product chosen and the requirements of the project, including its size, layout, height, subframe, access and installation. Get a quote for your project.

Building Regulations 2018 provide an exemption for certain freestanding decks where the deck is no larger than 10m² and no more than 800mm above natural ground level.

The exemption has specific conditions and doesn’t apply to every deck. Other building or planning requirements may also apply depending on the property and the proposed works.
