Located in Marlo, in Victoria’s far East Gippsland, The Little Drift is a design-led tiny home accommodation project that balances refined architecture with a rugged landscape setting.

Design Vision: Minimal Architecture for a Coastal Bush Setting

The brief for The Little Drift was to create bold, architectural tiny homes that sit confidently within their environment without overpowering it.

The design draws on refined city architecture and boutique hotel interiors, paired with organic textures that allow the surrounding bushland to take centre stage.

Materials were central to achieving that balance from the outset. For The Little Drift founder Hannah Macalister-Bills, every choice had to reflect the same understated sensibility as the brand itself. “The materials not only have to be durable in an outback landscape, but architectural and artistic too.”

Why NewTechWood Shadowline Cladding Was Chosen

A black cladding solution that could perform in a coastal environment without ongoing maintenance was the goal.

While Tom Hardy Designs and the builder were already familiar with NewTechWood, this was their first time specifying the product.Traditional charred timber was considered, but quickly ruled out. “”The ‘real thing’ — charred timber — was not cost effective, nor would it meet the requirements of low maintenance. No other brands had anything suitable,” said Hannah.

NewTechWood Shadowline Cladding in Shou Sugi Ban offered the depth, texture and architectural finish required without the need for painting or intensive upkeep. Its durability, ease of cleaning and product availability in a remote regional area further supported the decision.

How Black Cladding Transformed the Exterior

Before build completion, the impact of the black cladding was immediately evident, “Even before the project was finished, we were so impressed with how it looked.” shared Hannah.

Shadowline Cladding was paired with black flashings, windows, lighting and solar panels to create a cohesive, sculptural form that feels intentional and striking against the natural landscape. ” Despite the bold colour choice, the textured cladding softens the structure, catching light and shadow throughout the day and allowing the buildings to blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

Performance: Coastal Durability and Guest Response

Response to the tiny homes have been overwhelmingly positive. The homes have been praised for their minimalist clarity, refined detailing and the way they elevate the tiny home concept into a luxury accommodation experience. From a performance perspective, the cladding has held up well in a demanding coastal environment — reinforcing confidence in its suitability for similar projects.

Community and Collaboration: Building with East Gippsland Locals

Beyond the build itself, the project carried personal significance for Hannah. Collaborating with East Gippsland trades and suppliers brought the vision full circle. “Being a returning local, I got to work with friends from school that have started their own businesses. Connecting with the local community in a creative way was such a huge highlight,” says Hannah Macalister-Bills.

This local-first approach is embedded in The Little Drift’s identity and continues to shape its future direction. Stage Two of the accommodation is already underway, alongside plans for creative collaborations, events and exhibitions, including The Little Exhibition in 2026 and an events series with Sailors Grave Brewing.
