How do you keep your cool and turn a sandstone sandpit into something useful and stylish during a heatwave? We asked Brad from HC Urban.The project involved NewTechWood’s UH61 Castellation cladding and UH02 Metro decking ranges, both in colour Ipe, supplied by NewTechWood reseller Subiaco Restoration in Osborne Park.

 

Transform a Veritable Sandpit into a Beautiful Decking

HC Urban used these to transform a veritable sandpit into a beautiful decking platform/entertaining area for this Baldivis, W.A. home, and they did it during one of the hottest spells in 2023.

 

 

The project was tricky as well as rewarding for the team, who battled scorcher conditions during the transformation. The greater Perth metro area recorded heatwave conditions late 2023 (reaching 39 degrees in November).

Imagine the conditions the HC Urban team worked under surrounded by sand and limestone blocks, and the heat generated with an unrelenting sun beating down, all while being taunted by the cool waters of the pool beside them! Even their grumpy site supervisor (Luna, the dog) was unimpressed and apparently a little more cranky than usual.

Anyone else may have been tempted to say, “Nope, too hard, let’s go to the beach and come back when it’s cooler”, but it says a lot for their professionalism that the team hung in there and got the job done. (Just one of many reasons they are NewTechWood recommended installers. Nothing fazes these guys!)

A good product and good installers, go hand in hand

Their client chose them and Newtechwood after their father used HC Urban and NewTechWood previously and has followed them online ever since.  So, when Brad presented NewTechWood samples and the inspired design ideas he had in mind, it was a no-brainer decision for them.

Plus, it’s pretty hard to pass up a product that will never require resanding and resealing ever, won’t splinter, crack or warp, is UV and fade resistant, termites won’t eat it and comes with a 25-year residential warranty.

 

Decking and Cladding, Winning Combination

Initially, the plan was to use the NewTechWood Metro boards for the deck top and also to cover the sides, but always creative, Brad had some other ideas he put on the table for the owner’s consideration that involved combining different NewTechWood profiles.

The final design the owners fell in love with involved using the UH61 Castellation cladding down the sides to break up the structure and provide contrast with the UH02 Metro decking boards on top. And with the intention to hide as much limestone in the backyard as possible, the job turned out just as planned, with nobody accidentally or otherwise conveniently falling into the pool!

 

 

The owners loved the finished project, and while no doubt Brad and the HC Urban team were glad to pack up and escape the heat, Luna, the grumpy Supervisor was probably the happiest.
